Hard Chrome Plating is Ideal for Industrial Applications

Hard chrome plating, also known as hard chrome or simply chrome plating, involves applying a thin layer of chromium to a substrate to improve its hardness, corrosion resistance, and overall performance. When it comes to ensuring the longevity and reliability of hydraulic cylinders and components, few solutions match its efficiency.

Hard chrome plating materials include:

• Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder rods, stages and barrels
• Swivel posts and bodies
• Pump shafts, geared shafts and splined shafts
• Downhole tools
• Inside diameter bores

The electroplating process involves submerging a part into an electro-chemical bath. It is classified as a “cold” process where the operating temperature are between 58℃ to 60 ℃ ensuring the process doesn’t cause damage to the physical or mechanical properties of the piece of equipment. An electric current draws chromium metal from the chromic acid solution and applies it to the substrate, resulting in a completely adhered layer of chromium that will extend the life of the hydraulic cylinder and its components.
Chrome plating can be applied in thicknesses of 0.0005” to 0.025” on parts of up to 44′ in length and 24″ in diameter. Hard chrome plating can optimize equipment made of ferrous or non-ferrous metals except for magnesium and titanium. These two metals typically require an underlay of zinc, copper or nickel. Aluminum can be hard chrome plated; however, variants of alloys do require an undercoat of copper or nickel. Materials RHK most commonly plates are steel, cast iron, stainless steel, bronze, brass and copper.
To prepare for ideal chroming adherence, RHK cleans the item thoroughly and inspects it for any hidden damages. Also, any existing chrome is removed and any damage to the cylinder is repaired. The piece is then pre-polished to a consistent size and masked for full control of the chroming area. Once the process is completed the workpiece is polished to a precise dimensional tolerance and desired surface finish. The chroming process can be repeated multiple times on a single piece of equipment resulting in reduced downtime and replacement costs.

But what exactly makes hard chrome plating so essential for Hydraulic Cylinders and Equipment?

Enhanced Durability
One of the most significant advantages of hard chrome plating is its ability to significantly increase the hardness of metal surfaces. This added hardness translates to greater resistance against wear and tear, which is crucial for components subjected to constant friction and pressure. For hydraulic systems, where parts like pistons and rods are constantly in motion, this increased durability means fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs.

Superior Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion can be a major issue for hydraulic components, especially in environments where exposure to moisture and chemicals is common. Hard chrome plating forms a protective layer that shields the underlying metal from rust and corrosion. This not only extends the lifespan of hydraulic parts but also ensures reliable performance even under harsh conditions.

Improved Lubrication
The smooth, hard surface created by chrome plating reduces friction between moving parts due to its microcrack characteristics allowing for higher oil retention. This enhanced lubrication capability leads to smoother operation and reduced energy consumption. For hydraulic cylinders and other components, this means less strain on the system and improved efficiency.

Aesthetic Appeal
While not the primary reason for its use, the shiny, reflective surface of hard chrome plating can also enhance the visual appeal of components. For industries where appearance matters, such as military or transportation, this can be an added benefit.

Cost-Effectiveness
Though hard chrome plating involves an upfront investment, it pays off in the long run. The increased lifespan of plated components reduces the frequency of replacements and repairs, leading to overall cost savings. Additionally, the improved performance and reduced maintenance further contributes to cost-effectiveness.

Applications of Hard Chrome Plating

Hard chrome plating is a versatile solution with a wide range of applications across various industries. Here’s a look at some of the key areas where RHK Hydraulics’  hard chrome plating services can make a significant impact:

Hydraulic Cylinders and Rods
Hydraulic cylinders and rods are critical components in any hydraulic system, responsible for converting fluid pressure into mechanical force. These parts are subject to high stresses and must endure constant movement. Hard chrome plating provides them with the necessary hardness and resistance to wear and corrosion, ensuring reliable performance and extending service life.

Pistons and Shafts
In hydraulic systems, pistons and shafts play a crucial role in transferring energy and force. Chrome plating enhances their resistance to abrasion and corrosion, reducing the likelihood of component failure and maintaining efficient operation.

Automotive Parts
In the automotive industry, hard chrome plating is used to improve the performance and durability of various parts, including shock absorber rods, engine components, and transmission parts. The enhanced hardness and reduced friction contribute to smoother operation and longer-lasting parts.

Aerospace Components
Aerospace components are exposed to extreme conditions, making durability and reliability essential. Hard chrome plating is used on critical parts such as landing gear components, actuators, and hydraulic systems to ensure they can withstand the rigors of flight and harsh environmental conditions.

Mining and Construction Equipment
Heavy-duty mining and construction equipment often operate in challenging environments that subject components to high levels of wear and tear. Hard chrome plating provides the necessary protection for parts like excavator cylinders, drill rods, and other high-impact components, extending their lifespan and maintaining equipment efficiency.

Industrial Machinery
In various industrial settings, machinery parts experience constant friction and pressure. Hard chrome plating is applied to components such as rollers, guides, and shafts to enhance their durability and reduce maintenance needs, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.
